The current leadership of the US has virtually emasculated our military to the point where the Air Force is smaller than any time in its history and the Army is well on its way to pre-World War 2 levels. One by one the “warrior class” in our armed forces has been squeezed out in favor of technocrats and sycophants. In addition, the military has been forced to bow to the demands of "political correctness" by doing away with "don't ask, don't tell" and allowing women to serve in combat. Although a work of fiction, Duly Constituted Authority explores the consequences when an extremely liberal administration meddles with the military establishment without regard to combat readiness. It is a warning for the future of national security. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff takes on the President of the United States and the fate of the nation is up for grabs: who will win? Take a radical, anti-military administration hell-bent on using the armed forces for social experimentation with a like-minded secretary of defense with a personal axe to grind. Add to the mix a tradition-minded, career officer and his staff equally determined to preserve the high standards of the military and you have a recipe for a constitutional crisis potentially more dangerous than Truman versus MacArthur. The world watches and our nation’s enemies wait to see the outcome as the White House takes on the Pentagon. Can the cops and the FBI prevail over tanks and jet fighters? A political "potboiler" in the tradition of Allen Drury with a bit of Tom Clancy thrown in! "The US military is not a social-justice organization with an ancillary war-fighting mission."
